In my parental journey, I am at the stage where my children are introducing me to new ideas, things, subjects, topics to name a few. One of such is content on YouTube. As a businesswoman, I have used YouTube for years. However, the way it is being used with the young, younger and youngest generation has completely changed the game. My children have introduced me to content such as ‘itsfunneh’, ‘The Norris Nuts’, ‘CoryxKenshin’, DanTDM and ‘Fortnite’ a game I have enjoyed watching them play. As an educationist, I had to pick some lessons and one such is from Fortnite. I must confess, I watched them play the game severally before understanding it and coming up with these points of things learnt from watching Fortnite.

1. Communication: the players are always communicating over their headpiece to ensure they are explaining the next step of action.

2. Teamwork: this is so key when you are playing in teams against the opponent.

3. Belief: the aspect of when an avatar dies and light going up indicates a soul going up to the avatar controlling the game.

4. Analysing: players are thinking and talking about the next step to take, how to go about it and when to carry it out.

5. Persistence: players start as ‘newbie’ but keep coming back (not giving up) into the game to get better and earn more points.

6. New challenges: the team behind Fornite are always coming up with new challenges to keep their players engaged. Indicating that life is full of new challenges.

7. Engagement: the game has managed to keep its players engaged for a period of two years that it has been out.

8. Preparation: it gives new players the opportunity to prepare individually before joining into a team or playing with others.

9. No discrimination: this is so special because players can be whatever colour or sex they want to be without being labelled.

10. Shut Down/Refuel: ever so occasionally, the game shuts down to refuel and no game can take place.

11. Timing: each game in teams is timed to last in certain minutes, indicating there is a time and season for actions to be implemented.

12. Opportunities to improve to win: If you do not win this time, you can win another time.

13. There is no end in the game portal: Showing that life goes on with or without you.

Let me know what new content your child or children have introduced you to and how you have used it to bond with them.
